David declares, “O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early,” promising to praise the Lord among the people, and sing praises among the nations, since His mercy is great above the heavens, and His truth reaches to the clouds.
David prays that God be exalted above the heavens, and His “glory,” “kavod” in Hebrew, above all the earth, asking that His beloved be delivered, saving with His right hand, and answering him, describing God’s promise that He has spoken in His holiness, that He will divide Shechem, and measure out the valley of Succoth, Gilead being His, Manasseh also His, Ephraim also the strength of His head, Judah His lawgiver, Moab His washpot, over Edom casting out His shoe, over Philistia triumphing.
David asks who will bring him into the strong city, who will lead him into Edom, questioning whether God has not cast them off, and whether He will not go forth with their armies, pleading for help from trouble, since the help of man is vain, closing with confident declaration, “Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies,” this entire psalm essentially combining verses from two earlier psalms into a fresh, unified declaration of praise and confident petition for victory.
This psalm’s deliberate combination of material from two earlier psalms shows that genuine worship material could be thoughtfully reused and recombined for fresh purposes within Israel’s ongoing life of praise, rather than treated as fixed, unchangeable text. Its opening declaration, my heart is fixed, repeated for emphasis, models the kind of settled, deliberate resolve to praise that doesn’t wait for feelings to align before choosing worship.
