The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Gates” it comes from the Hebrew Word “sha’ar” which means “gates.”

The psalmist calls the redeemed of the Lord to say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy, gathering them out of the lands, from the east and west, from the north and south, describing wanderers in the wilderness who found no city to dwell in, hungry and thirsty, their soul fainting, yet they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses.
The psalmist describes prisoners sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, bound in affliction and iron, because they rebelled against the words of God, whose heart was brought down with labor, yet they cried to the Lord, and He saved them, breaking their bands in pieces, describing fools afflicted because of their transgression, whose soul abhorred all manner of food, drawing near to the “gates,” “sha’ar” in Hebrew, of death, yet crying to the Lord, and He sent His word, and healed them, delivering them from their destructions.
The psalmist describes those who go down to the sea in ships, seeing the works of the Lord in the deep, a stormy wind lifting up the waves, their soul melting because of trouble, reeling to and fro like a drunken man, yet crying to the Lord, and He made the storm calm, so its waves were still, bringing them to their desired haven, closing with a broader meditation on how God turns rivers into a wilderness and the wilderness into pools of water, satisfying the hungry, and blessing the righteous, urging whoever is wise to observe these things, and understand the lovingkindness of the Lord, four vivid, distinct pictures of genuine deliverance from wandering, imprisonment, sickness, and storm.
This psalm’s four distinct pictures of rescue, wanderers, prisoners, the sick, and storm-tossed sailors, together offer a comprehensive portrait of the many different forms genuine human distress can take, and God’s consistent readiness to deliver in each one. Its repeated refrain, they cried to the Lord and He delivered them, models the simple, direct pattern of honest crisis met by honest crying out, regardless of the specific nature of the trouble involved.
