The psalmist calls everyone to give thanks to the Lord, calling upon His name, making known His deeds among the people, singing to Him, and talking of all His wondrous works, glorying in His holy name, seeking the Lord and His strength, seeking His face continually, remembering His marvellous works, and the judgments of His mouth.
The psalmist recalls God’s “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, remembered forever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations, the covenant made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac, confirmed to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant, describing how He suffered no man to do them wrong, reproving kings for their sakes, and calling for a famine upon the land, sending a man before them, Joseph, sold as a servant, whose feet they hurt with fetters, until the time his word came, the word of the Lord testing him.
The psalmist recounts the exodus story extensively, God sending Moses His servant, Aaron whom He chose, showing His signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham, turning their waters into blood, sending frogs, flies, and lice, hail, and flaming fire, smiting their vines and fig trees, speaking, and locusts came, smiting all the firstborn in their land, bringing His people out with silver and gold, none among their tribes being feeble, Egypt being glad when they departed, spreading a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light in the night, giving them the lands of the heathen, that they might observe His statutes, and keep His laws, closing with confident praise, “Praise ye the LORD,” for this extensive, faithful history reaching all the way from Abraham’s calling through the conquest of the promised land.
This psalm’s extensive historical recounting, from Abraham through Joseph, Moses, and the exodus plagues, models how remembering specific, concrete acts of God’s faithfulness across an entire national history can fuel genuine, grounded gratitude rather than vague, generic praise. Its careful attention to detail, naming the plagues and describing Joseph’s specific suffering before his eventual exaltation, shows that thorough remembrance strengthens faith more effectively than abbreviated, surface-level summary.
