David asks why the Lord stands afar off, and hides Himself in times of trouble, describing how the wicked in his pride persecutes the poor, boasting of his heart’s desire, blessing the covetous, whom the Lord abhors, his ways always grievous, God’s judgments far above out of his sight, puffing at all his enemies.
David describes this wicked man’s heart, saying he shall not be moved, for he shall never be in adversity, his mouth full of cursing, deceit, and “fraud,” “mirmah” in Hebrew, under his tongue mischief and vanity, sitting in the lurking places of the villages, murdering the innocent, his eyes privily set against the poor, lying in wait secretly as a lion in his den, catching the poor when he draws him into his net.
David cries out for the Lord to arise, lift up His hand, and not forget the humble, asking why the wicked contemns God, saying in his heart that He will not require it, urging the Lord to break the arm of the wicked and evil man, seeking out his wickedness until He finds none, declaring that the Lord is King forever and ever, that the heathen have perished out of His land, and that He will hear the desire of the humble, cause His ear to hear, judging the fatherless and the oppressed, so the man of the earth may no more oppress, a psalm that moves from honest complaint about apparent divine silence toward renewed confidence in God’s ultimate justice.
David’s honest question, why do you stand far off, gives genuine voice to the painful experience of feeling God’s apparent absence while injustice seems to flourish unchecked. This psalm’s eventual turn toward confident trust, without ever retracting its initial honest complaint, shows that genuine faith can hold both real questions and real hope together without contradiction.
