Solomon describes wisdom having built her house, hewn out her seven pillars, killed her beasts, mingled her wine, and furnished her table, sending forth her maidens, crying upon the highest places of the city, inviting whoever is simple to turn in here, saying to him who lacks “understanding,” “chocmah” in Hebrew, meaning wisdom itself, to come, eat of her bread, and drink of the wine she has mingled, forsaking the foolish, and living, going in the way of understanding.
Solomon warns that whoever reproves a scorner gets shame to himself, and whoever rebukes a wicked man gets a blot, urging his readers not to reprove a scorner, lest he hate them, but to rebuke a wise man, and he will love them, since giving instruction to a wise man makes him yet wiser, and teaching a just man increases his learning, declaring that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy being understanding, since by wisdom his days shall be multiplied, and the years of his life shall be increased.
Solomon then describes a foolish woman, clamorous, simple, and knowing nothing, sitting at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, calling to those who pass by, going right on their ways, inviting the simple to turn in here, saying to him who lacks understanding, that stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant, closing with a stark, sobering contrast, that he does not know the dead are there, and that her guests are in the depths of hell, this final chapter offering a fitting, dramatic close to Proverbs’ opening section, two competing invitations, wisdom’s genuine feast versus folly’s deceptive, ultimately fatal trap.
This chapter’s parallel structure, wisdom and folly each personified as women issuing competing invitations to the same simple passerby, offers a memorable, visual framework for understanding life’s fundamental choice between genuine flourishing and destructive deception. Its warning against wasting effort correcting scorners, while investing instead in already wise people eager to learn more, offers practical wisdom about where teaching energy is most fruitfully spent.
