Solomon urges his son to attend to his wisdom, and bow his ear to his understanding, that he may regard discretion, and his lips keep knowledge, warning that the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil, but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword, her feet going down to death, her steps taking hold on hell.
Solomon urges him to remove his way far from her, and not come near the door of her house, lest he give his honor to others, and his years to the cruel, lest strangers be filled with his wealth, and his labors be in the house of a stranger, warning him to mourn at the last, when his flesh and body are consumed, saying how he has hated instruction, and his heart despised reproof, and has not obeyed the voice of his teachers, nor inclined his ear to those who instructed him, coming almost into all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
Solomon urges him to drink waters out of his own “cistern,” “bor” in Hebrew, and running waters out of his own well, letting his fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets, letting them be only his own, and not strangers’ with him, letting his fountain be blessed, and rejoicing with the wife of his youth, as the loving hind and pleasant roe, letting her breasts satisfy him at all times, and being ravished always with her love, asking why he should be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger, since the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders all his goings, closing with a sobering warning that the wicked shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
Solomon’s vivid warning about sexual temptation, honey-sweet lips leading ultimately to bitter, deadly consequences, offers unflinching honesty about how deceptively attractive genuine danger can initially appear. His beautiful counter-vision of faithful marriage, rejoicing continually in the wife of one’s youth, presents fidelity not as mere restriction, but as genuine, lasting satisfaction far surpassing any fleeting, destructive alternative.
