Agur, son of Jakeh, confesses his own genuine limitation, declaring surely he is more brutish than any man, and has not the understanding of a man, he has neither learned wisdom, nor has the knowledge of the holy, asking who has ascended up into heaven, or descended, who has gathered the wind in his fists, who has bound the waters in a garment, who has established all the ends of the earth, what is His name, and what is His Son’s name, if one can tell.
Agur declares every “word,” “imrah” in Hebrew, of God is pure, He being a shield to those who put their trust in Him, urging not to add to His words, lest He reprove and one be found a liar, asking for two things before he dies, to remove far from him vanity and lies, and to give him neither poverty nor riches, feeding him with food convenient for him, lest he be full and deny God, or be poor and steal, and take the name of his God in vain.
Agur closes with a series of numerical proverbs, describing generations that curse their father, things the earth cannot bear, and remarkable observations from nature, the way of an eagle in the air, a serpent upon a rock, a ship in the midst of the sea, and the way of a man with a maid, describing four things that are little upon the earth, yet are exceedingly wise, ants, conies, locusts, and the spider, this humble, thoughtful chapter offering a genuinely different tone from Solomon’s earlier confident instruction, one marked instead by honest humility before life’s genuine mysteries.
Agur’s humble confession of his own limited understanding offers a refreshing contrast to confident instruction found elsewhere in Proverbs, modeling genuine intellectual humility as itself a form of real wisdom. His prayer for neither poverty nor riches, but simply sufficient daily provision, reveals mature spiritual insight into how either extreme, wealth or want, can genuinely threaten authentic faithfulness to God.
