Solomon urges his son not to forget his law, but let his heart keep his commandments, since length of days and long life, and peace, they shall add to him, urging him not to let mercy and truth forsake him, binding them about his neck, writing them upon the table of his heart, so he shall find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
Solomon declares famously, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own “understanding,” “binah” in Hebrew. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths,” warning not to be wise in his own eyes, but to fear the Lord, and depart from evil, promising this shall be health to his navel, and marrow to his bones, honoring the Lord with his substance, and with the firstfruits of all his increase, so his barns shall be filled with plenty.
Solomon urges his son not to despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be weary of His correction, since whom the Lord loves He corrects, even as a father the son in whom he delights, declaring happy is the man who finds wisdom, since the merchandise of it is better than silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold, she being more precious than rubies, length of days being in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honor, her ways being ways of pleasantness, and all her paths peace, closing with practical instructions to do good to whom it is due, not to devise evil against a neighbor, and not to envy the oppressor, since the just shall inherit glory, but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Solomon’s beloved instruction, trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, offers timeless wisdom for navigating uncertainty, acknowledging the genuine limits of human insight while confidently entrusting life’s direction to God instead. His observation that the Lord corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a beloved child, reframes difficult discipline as evidence of genuine care rather than rejection or abandonment.
