Solomon warns that he who, being often reproved, hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy, when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn, famously declaring, “Where there is no “vision,” “chazon” in Hebrew, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”
Solomon describes how the king by judgment establishes the land, but he who receives gifts overthrows it, the fear of man bringing a snare, but whoever puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe, many seeking the ruler’s favor, but every man’s judgment coming from the Lord, an unjust man being an abomination to the just, and he who is upright in the way being abomination to the wicked.
Solomon closes describing how a wise son makes a glad father, but he who keeps company with harlots spends his substance, the king by judgment establishing the land, urging correction of a child, since he shall give delight to his soul, without vision the people casting off restraint, but he who keeps the law being happy, closing with the observation that the fear of man brings a snare, but whoever puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe, this recurring theme of trusting God rather than fearing people offering practical, applicable wisdom for genuine courage and stability.
Solomon’s memorable declaration, where there is no vision the people perish, but happy is he who keeps the law, connects genuine national and personal wellbeing directly to having clear, God-honoring purpose and direction rather than mere aimless drift. His observation that fear of man brings a snare, while trust in the Lord provides safety, offers practical wisdom for resisting the very real pressure to compromise conviction merely to please or appease other people.
