Solomon declares famously, “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion,” for the transgression of a land many are its princes, but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged, a poor man who oppresses the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaves no food.
Solomon describes how those who forsake the “law,” “torah” in Hebrew, praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with them, evil men not understanding judgment, but those who seek the Lord understand all things, better is the poor who walks in his uprightness, than he who is perverse in his ways, though he be rich, whoever keeps the law is a wise son, but he who is a companion of riotous men shames his father.
Solomon closes with observations about honest labor, generosity, and integrity, he who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who follows vain persons shall have poverty enough, a faithful man abounding with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich shall not be innocent, he who has a bountiful eye shall be blessed, since he gives of his bread to the poor, closing with the observation that whoever trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely shall be delivered, he who confesses and forsakes his sins shall have mercy.
Solomon’s vivid contrast, the wicked flee even when no one pursues, while the righteous remain bold as a lion, illustrates how guilt itself produces genuine fearfulness regardless of actual external threat, while genuine integrity produces authentic confidence. His observation that whoever confesses and forsakes sin shall find mercy offers real hope that genuine repentance, not merely regret, opens the way toward authentic restoration.
