PROVERBS 20 ‐ “Wine Is a Mocker”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Sluggard” it comes from the Hebrew Word “atsel” which means “sluggard.”

Solomon warns against drunkenness and laziness while praising genuine integrity and honest dealing. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Proverbs 20.

Solomon warns, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise,” the fear of a king being as the roaring of a lion, whoever provokes him to anger sinning against his own soul, it being an honor for a man to cease from strife, but every fool will be meddling.

Solomon describes how the “sluggard,” “atsel” in Hebrew, will not plow by reason of the cold, therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing, counsel in the heart of man being like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out, most men proclaiming every one his own goodness, but a faithful man who can find, describing divers weights and divers measures being both alike abomination to the Lord.

Solomon closes with observations about the king who sits in the throne of judgment scattering away all evil with his eyes, asking who can say his heart is clean, a false weight and a false balance being abomination to the Lord, but a just weight being His delight, bread of deceit being sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth shall be filled with gravel, closing with the observation that the glory of young men is their strength, and the beauty of old men is the gray head, and that the blueness of a wound cleanses away evil, so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Solomon’s blunt warning that wine is a mocker and strong drink leads to raging offers unflinching honesty about alcohol’s genuinely deceptive, destructive potential when consumed without appropriate caution or restraint. His observation that divers weights and measures are both abomination to the Lord reinforces yet again this collection’s consistent concern for honest, fair business dealing as genuine spiritual and ethical concern.
