Solomon urges his son to receive his words, and hide his commandments with him, inclining his ear to wisdom, applying his heart to understanding, crying after knowledge, and lifting up his voice for understanding, seeking her as silver, and searching for her as for hidden treasures, since then he shall understand the fear of the Lord, and find the “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, of God.
Solomon explains that the Lord gives wisdom, out of His mouth coming knowledge and understanding, laying up sound wisdom for the righteous, being a buckler to those who walk uprightly, keeping the paths of judgment, and preserving the way of His saints, so his son shall understand righteousness, judgment, equity, and every good path, when wisdom enters his heart, and knowledge is pleasant to his soul, discretion preserving him, and understanding keeping him.
Solomon describes how wisdom will deliver him from the way of the evil man, from the man who speaks froward things, who leaves the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, and from the strange woman, who flatters with her words, who forsakes the guide of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God, warning that her house inclines to death, and her paths to the dead, none who go to her returning again, urging him instead to walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous, since the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it, but the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors rooted out of it.
Solomon’s vivid comparison of seeking wisdom to searching for silver and hidden treasure suggests that genuine understanding requires active, diligent, even costly pursuit rather than passive expectation that it will simply arrive unbidden. His warning against destructive paths, both the man who speaks perverse things and the seductive stranger, shows that wisdom’s protective value lies precisely in helping navigate real, tempting dangers that could otherwise lead toward genuine ruin.
