PROVERBS 17 ‐ “A Friend Loveth at All Times”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Trying” it comes from the Hebrew Word “bachan” which means “to test, try.”

Solomon addresses genuine friendship, family dynamics, and the value of a cheerful spirit. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Proverbs 17.

Solomon declares better is a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than a house full of sacrifices with strife, a wise servant shall have rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren, the fining pot being for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the Lord “trying,” “bachan” in Hebrew, the hearts.

Solomon declares famously, “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity,” a merry heart doing good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drying the bones, he who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates very friends, a reproof entering more into a wise man than a hundred stripes into a fool, an evil man seeking only rebellion, therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

Solomon closes with observations, he who withholds correspondence sows discord, and a fool has no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself, even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise, and he who shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding, closing with practical wisdom about the value of joy, the danger of anger, and the importance of restrained, thoughtful speech throughout daily relationships and dealings.

Solomon’s beloved declaration, a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity, distinguishes genuine, tested friendship from mere fair-weather association, defining true friendship precisely by its consistency through difficulty. His observation that even a fool who remains silent is counted wise reveals how restraint in speech alone can create the appearance of wisdom, a memorable, cautionary reminder about the genuine value of thoughtful silence.
