Solomon declares every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish plucks it down with her hands, he who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is perverse in his ways despises Him, in the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride, but the lips of the wise shall preserve them, where no oxen are, the crib is clean, but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
Solomon describes a faithful “witness,” “ed” in Hebrew, who will not lie, but a false witness will utter lies, a scorner seeking wisdom and finding it not, but knowledge being easy to him who understands, going from the presence of a foolish man, when perceiving not in him the lips of knowledge, the wisdom of the prudent being to understand his way, but the folly of fools being deceit, fools making a mock at sin, but among the righteous there being favor.
Solomon closes describing how the heart knows its own bitterness, and a stranger does not intermeddle with its joy, the house of the wicked being overthrown, but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish, there being a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, righteousness exalting a nation, but sin being a reproach to any people, the king’s favor being toward a wise servant, but his wrath being against him who causes shame, closing with the observation that he who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he who honors Him has mercy on the poor.
Solomon’s warning that there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end are the ways of death, cautions against trusting purely subjective feelings of rightness without genuine, external accountability and wisdom. His declaration that righteousness exalts a nation, while sin brings reproach, connects individual moral character directly to broader, communal and national wellbeing rather than treating them as entirely separate concerns.
