Solomon declares that a wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother, treasures of wickedness profiting nothing, but righteousness delivering from death, the Lord not allowing the soul of the righteous to famish, but casting away the substance of the wicked, He becoming poor who deals with a slack hand, but the hand of the diligent making rich.
Solomon contrasts the “righteous,” “tsaddiq” in Hebrew, and the wicked throughout an extended series of individual, memorable observations, the memory of the just being blessed, but the name of the wicked rotting, the mouth of the righteous being a well of life, but violence covering the mouth of the wicked, hatred stirring up strifes, but love covering all sins, in the multitude of words there wanting not sin, but he who refrains his lips is wise, the labor of the righteous tending to life, the fruit of the wicked to sin.
Solomon continues this pattern of contrasting wisdom, the fear of the Lord prolonging days, but the years of the wicked being shortened, the hope of the righteous being gladness, but the expectation of the wicked perishing, the way of the Lord being strength to the upright, but destruction to the workers of iniquity, the righteous never being removed, but the wicked not inhabiting the earth, the mouth of the just bringing forth wisdom, but the froward tongue being cut out, this chapter beginning an extensive collection of pithy, memorable, individually complete proverbs contrasting wise and foolish, righteous and wicked living across virtually every dimension of daily life.
