Paul urges two women, Euodias and Syntyche, to be of the same mind in the Lord, asking a genuine companion to help them, since they labored alongside Paul in the gospel. He instructs believers to “rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice,” urging them to let their gentleness be known to everyone, since the Lord is at hand, and to be anxious for nothing, but in everything, through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, to let their requests be made known to God, promising that “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Paul instructs believers to think on whatever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, if there be any virtue or praise, urging them to practice the things they had learned, received, heard, and seen in him, promising that the God of peace would be with them. He thanks the Philippians warmly for their recent gift, sent through Epaphroditus, explaining he has learned, in whatever state he is, to be “content,” “autarkes” in Greek, meaning self-sufficient regardless of circumstances, knowing how to be abased and how to abound, instructed both to be full and to be hungry.
Paul declares one of Scripture’s most quoted verses of confidence. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” He thanks the Philippians for sharing generously in his affliction, being the only church that shared with him when he first left Macedonia, and while not seeking the gift itself, desires fruit that abounds to their account, describing their gift as a sweet-smelling sacrifice acceptable to God. He promises that God will supply all their need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus, and closes with greetings and his familiar benediction of grace.
Paul’s famous declaration, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, is often quoted out of context as a promise of achievement, but Paul specifically applies it to contentment, learning to be at peace whether in abundance or in genuine need. That kind of steady contentment, regardless of circumstance, reflects real strength found entirely in Christ rather than in changing conditions.
