God describes a special vow that anyone, man or woman, could choose to take for a season of extraordinary devotion. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Numbers 6.
God gives instructions for anyone who chooses to take a Nazarite vow, “nazir” in Hebrew, meaning one who is separated or consecrated, a voluntary period of heightened devotion to the Lord. During this vow, the person abstains completely from wine, strong drink, grapes, and even grape products in any form, allows their hair to grow uncut, and avoids any contact with a dead body, even that of a close family member, since they are “holy unto the LORD” for the duration of their vow.
If someone dies suddenly near a Nazarite, defiling them accidentally, they must shave their head, offer specific sacrifices, and effectively restart the entire vow period from the beginning, since the previous days are lost due to the defilement. When the vow period is completed, the Nazarite brings offerings to the tabernacle, shaves their head, and burns the hair in the fire under the peace offering, formally ending their period of special separation.
The chapter closes with the well-known priestly blessing God gives Aaron and his sons to pronounce over Israel. “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” God adds a striking promise attached to this blessing. “They shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.”
The Nazarite vow shows that extraordinary devotion to God was never limited to priests or a special class of people. Any ordinary Israelite could choose it voluntarily. And the priestly blessing that follows reminds us that ultimately, it is God’s name placed on His people, and His initiative, that brings genuine blessing.
