God gives detailed instructions for the Feast of Trumpets on the first day of the seventh month, a holy convocation marked by a blowing of trumpets, “teruah” in Hebrew, meaning a shout or blast, along with specific burnt offerings, a sin offering, and the regular daily offerings continuing alongside these special additions.
Ten days later comes the Day of Atonement, already detailed extensively in Leviticus 16, here reaffirmed with its own specific set of offerings, a solemn day requiring the people to “afflict your souls” and do no work at all, the most serious fast day in Israel’s entire calendar. Five days after that begins the week-long Feast of Tabernacles, marked by an enormous, escalating series of offerings, thirteen bullocks on the first day, decreasing by one each successive day through the seventh, along with rams, lambs, and goats offered daily throughout the week.
An eighth day follows as “a solemn assembly,” closing out this feast with its own distinct set of offerings, marking the conclusion of Israel’s entire annual festival calendar. The chapter closes noting that Moses told the children of Israel “according to all that the LORD commanded Moses,” summarizing this detailed, demanding, but consistently observed rhythm of worship stretching across the seventh month, Israel’s most heavily concentrated season of sacred gatherings each year.
The sheer scale of offerings required during this single month, especially the escalating sacrifices of the Feast of Tabernacles, shows how much this season mattered in Israel’s calendar. Some seasons of worship are simply meant to be more intense and concentrated than others, calling for extraordinary devotion rather than the ordinary daily rhythm.
