The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Sceptre” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shebet” which means “sceptre, rod of authority.”
Balaam looks out over Israel’s camp one more time, and delivers his most striking prophecy yet. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Numbers 24.
Seeing that it pleases the Lord to bless Israel, Balaam no longer seeks enchantments as before, but simply looks out toward the wilderness where Israel is camped, and “the Spirit of God came upon him.” He describes Israel’s tents as beautiful, compares the nation to a flourishing garden and cedar trees planted by the water, and declares that Israel’s king shall be higher than Agag, his kingdom exalted.
Balak’s anger burns fiercely, and he tells Balaam to flee home without any reward, since he has blessed Israel three times instead of cursing them as hired to do. But Balaam reminds him again that he warned from the beginning he could only speak what the Lord puts in his mouth. Before leaving, Balaam delivers one final, remarkable prophecy about the distant future. “There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel,” describing a coming ruler who will have dominion over Israel’s enemies.
Balaam also prophesies briefly concerning Amalek, the Kenites, and other surrounding peoples, describing their eventual downfall, before both men return to their own homes. This final section closes Balaam’s strange, complicated role in the story, a hired pagan prophet who, despite his own compromised character revealed more fully in later chapters, could not help but speak genuine, accurate blessing over God’s people whenever the Spirit of God rested on him.
Balaam’s prophecy of a coming Star and Sceptre out of Israel points forward far beyond his own time, ultimately toward the Messiah. It’s a striking reminder that God can use even a reluctant, morally compromised outsider to speak genuine truth. His purposes are never limited to only the most obviously faithful messengers.
