NUMBERS 21 ‐ “The Bronze Serpent”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Fiery serpent” it comes from the Hebrew Word “saraph” which means “fiery, burning serpent.”

Complaining leads to a plague of deadly snakes, and God’s remedy is stranger than anyone expects. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Numbers 21.

Israel defeats the Canaanite king of Arad after he attacks them, but the people soon grow discouraged on their long journey and speak against God and Moses again, complaining about the manna and their difficult path. God sends “fiery serpents,” “saraph” in Hebrew, among the people, and many die from their venomous bites. The people quickly confess their sin and ask Moses to intercede, and God instructs him to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole, so that anyone bitten who looks at it will live.

Israel continues its journey, and Scripture records several victory songs and travel notes along the way, including their defeat of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who refuses to let them pass peacefully and instead comes out to fight, only to be decisively defeated, giving Israel possession of his land. Israel similarly defeats Og, the king of Bashan, described as a giant, whose enormous iron bedstead is later remembered as evidence of his unusual size.

These military victories, won directly through God’s help, begin giving Israel real territory east of the Jordan River even before they cross into Canaan itself, a tangible, growing sign that God’s promise of land was beginning to be fulfilled in real, physical ways, even for this generation still journeying through the wilderness.

The bronze serpent seems like an unusual remedy, but its logic was simple, look at the very thing that represented the judgment, and live. Centuries later, Jesus Himself pointed back to this exact image to describe His own crucifixion, another unlikely-looking remedy that brings life to anyone willing to simply look and believe.
