Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses, criticizing his marriage to a Cushite woman, but their real complaint quickly surfaces. “Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us?” Scripture notes that Moses was “very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth,” and that he does not defend himself. God Himself hears their complaint and calls all three siblings to the tabernacle immediately.
God descends in a pillar of cloud and explains the unique nature of Moses’ relationship with Him, that while He speaks to other prophets in visions and dreams, He speaks with Moses “mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches,” since Moses is faithful in all God’s house. God asks pointedly why they were not afraid to speak against His servant Moses. The Hebrew word for this anger, “charah,” describes God’s kindled displeasure at their presumption.
When the cloud departs, Miriam becomes leprous, “white as snow.” Aaron immediately pleads with Moses on her behalf, and Moses cries out to God to heal her. God responds that if her own father had merely spit in her face in disgrace, she would bear that shame for seven days, so she must remain shut outside the camp for seven days before being readmitted. The people wait for her the whole time before journeying onward, showing that Miriam’s standing among the community, despite her failure, still mattered enough for the entire camp to pause.
Moses’ remarkable meekness in this chapter stands out sharply against his siblings’ jealousy. He never defended himself or retaliated, and immediately interceded for Miriam once she was struck. Real humility, this story shows, responds to personal attack not with self-justification, but with genuine concern for the person who caused the harm.
