The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Trumpet” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chatzotzerah” which means “trumpet.”
After nearly a year camped at Sinai, Israel finally sets out again, guided by the sound of silver trumpets. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Numbers 10.
God instructs Moses to make two silver trumpets, “chatzotzerah” in Hebrew, used for calling the congregation together and directing the camps when to journey. Different trumpet signals communicate different instructions, one blast for gathering leaders, two blasts for gathering the whole congregation, and an alarm sound signaling the camps to set out in their assigned order. These trumpets also serve a purpose in battle and during appointed feasts, reminding Israel before the Lord and saving them from their enemies.
On the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year after leaving Egypt, the cloud lifts from the tabernacle, and Israel sets out from the wilderness of Sinai in precise order, tribe by tribe, exactly as God had organized them back in chapter two, with the Kohathites carrying the sanctuary’s holy things after the tabernacle itself had already been taken down ahead of them.
Moses asks his father-in-law Hobab to journey with them, since he knows the wilderness well and can serve as their eyes, though Hobab initially wants to return to his own land. Whenever the ark sets out ahead of the camp, Moses declares, “Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered.” And whenever it rests, he says, “Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel,” marking the ark’s movement as the true center and guide of the entire nation’s journey.
After spending nearly a year camped at Sinai receiving instructions, building the tabernacle, and organizing the nation, Israel finally moves forward in exactly the order God had carefully prepared them for. Sometimes a long season of preparation, however tedious it feels, is simply what it takes before real forward movement can genuinely begin.
