All the people gather as one man in the street before the water gate, asking Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, and he reads it before the assembled men, women, and everyone who could understand, from morning until midday, with the people’s ears attentive to the book of the law. Ezra stands upon a specially built wooden pulpit, and when he opens the book, all the people stand up, and Ezra blesses the Lord, the great God, while the people answer, “Amen, Amen,” lifting their hands and bowing their heads, worshiping the Lord with their faces to the ground.
The Levites help the people understand the law, reading distinctly and giving the “sense,” “sekel” in Hebrew, so they understand the reading. When the people hear the words of the law, they weep, but Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites tell them not to mourn or weep, since this day is holy to the Lord their God, instructing them instead to go their way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared, “for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
The people go away to eat, drink, send portions, and celebrate with great gladness, since they finally understand the words that had been declared to them. On the second day, the family heads gather to Ezra to study the law further, and discover written instructions that Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, so they proclaim this throughout their cities and Jerusalem, building booths on their roofs and in their courts, celebrating this feast with very great gladness, reading from the book of the law of God daily throughout the entire festival, a joyful season of rediscovering and recommitting to Scripture together as one unified community.
The people’s initial tears upon hearing the law, followed by the leaders’ insistence on joyful celebration instead, shows genuine spiritual wisdom in recognizing that conviction over past failure should ultimately lead to grateful, joyful response rather than prolonged despair. This chapter’s memorable declaration, that the joy of the Lord is your strength, offers enduring, practical encouragement for anyone genuinely confronting their own shortcomings before God.
