Jerusalem finally celebrates its completed wall with a joyful, citywide dedication ceremony. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Nehemiah 12.
The chapter records the priests and Levites who returned earlier with Zerubbabel and Jeshua, along with their successors serving during this later period, careful genealogical records maintained to preserve the legitimate priestly and Levitical lines through multiple generations since the original return from exile.
At the dedication of the wall, the Levites are sought out from all their dwelling places and brought to Jerusalem to celebrate the dedication with gladness, thanksgivings, singing, cymbals, psalteries, and harps. Nehemiah brings up the princes of Judah upon the wall, appointing two great companies who give thanks, walking in procession in opposite directions along the top of the wall itself, singers and Levitical musicians accompanying each group, until they meet together in the house of God, offering great “sacrifices,” “zevach” in Hebrew, and rejoicing greatly, since God had made them rejoice with great joy, with the women and children rejoicing too, so that the joy of Jerusalem could be heard even from far away.
On that same day, men are appointed over the storehouse chambers for the offerings, firstfruits, and tithes, gathering the portions assigned by the law for priests and Levites, since Judah rejoices for the priests and Levites who properly serve, following the order David and Solomon had originally established, when singers and porters kept their watch according to the commandment of David and his son Solomon, a fitting, joyful culmination to years of difficult, determined rebuilding work finally reaching its celebratory completion.
The two processional companies walking in opposite directions along the top of the very wall they had built together, before meeting at the temple, created a vivid, symbolic image of the entire city joined together in shared celebration. This joyful dedication, heard from far away, stands as fitting testimony to just how much genuine hardship and perseverance had gone into finally reaching this celebratory moment.
