Leaders and people alike put their names to a formal, written commitment to follow God’s law. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Nehemiah 10.
The chapter lists those who seal this covenant, beginning with Nehemiah the governor, followed by numerous priests, Levites, and chiefs of the people, an extensive roll call confirming the broad, representative participation of the entire community in this solemn commitment. The rest of the people, priests, Levites, porters, singers, Nethinims, and everyone who had separated themselves from foreign peoples to the law of God, along with their wives, sons, and daughters having knowledge and understanding, join their leaders in this “oath,” “shevuah” in Hebrew.
They enter into a curse and an oath to walk in God’s law given through Moses, and to observe and do all the commandments, judgments, and statutes of the Lord. Specifically, they commit not to give their daughters to the surrounding peoples in marriage, nor take their daughters for their sons, and if these peoples bring merchandise or grain to sell on the sabbath, not to buy it from them on the sabbath or on any holy day, and to release debts every seventh year.
The people also commit to specific, practical provisions for supporting the temple, an annual third of a shekel for the service of God’s house, wood offerings brought at appointed times for burning on the altar, firstfruits of their ground and trees, firstborn of their sons and cattle, and the firstfruits of their dough, offerings, and wine and oil, all brought to the priests and Levites at the chambers of the house of their God. They close committing firmly, “we will not forsake the house of our God,” ensuring the temple’s ongoing operation and worship would remain properly, sustainably funded going forward.
The specificity of these commitments, covering everything from intermarriage to sabbath commerce to precise tithing amounts, shows that genuine covenant renewal requires translating spiritual conviction into concrete, measurable practices rather than vague, sentimental resolve. This detailed, formally sealed document ensured that the emotional high of the previous chapters’ confession would actually produce lasting, practical change in how the community lived.
