News from Jerusalem brings a Persian official to tears, and then to prayer. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Nehemiah 1.
Nehemiah, serving as cupbearer in the Persian capital of Shushan, receives visitors from Judah and asks about the Jews who escaped captivity and about Jerusalem. They report that the remnant left in the province is in great affliction and reproach, Jerusalem’s wall broken down, and its gates burned with fire, news that causes Nehemiah to sit down and weep, mourning certain days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
Nehemiah offers an extended “prayer,” “tefillah” in Hebrew, confessing the sins of the children of Israel, including his own house, acknowledging that they have dealt very corruptly against God and have not kept the commandments given through Moses. He reminds God of His promise, that if Israel returns to Him and keeps His commandments, He will gather them again to the place He has chosen, even from the farthest parts of heaven.
Nehemiah asks God to be attentive to his prayer and the prayer of God’s servants who desire to fear His name, and asks for success today, granting him mercy before the Persian king, since Nehemiah served as the king’s cupbearer, a position of trust granting him rare access to make an unusual, potentially dangerous request. This closing detail sets up the dramatic conversation with the king that will unfold in the very next chapter.
Nehemiah’s response to devastating news, weeping, fasting, and extended prayer before taking any action, shows genuine emotional and spiritual processing rather than immediate impulsive reaction. His careful, humble prayer, grounded in honest confession and confident appeal to God’s own promises, models exactly the kind of preparation that should precede any significant undertaking.
