Nahum the Elkoshite records the burden of Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum, declaring, “God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies,” the “vengeance,” “naqam” in Hebrew, describing the Lord as slow to anger, and great in power, and who will not at all acquit the wicked.
Nahum describes the Lord’s way as in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet, He rebuking the sea, and making it dry, and drying up all the rivers, Bashan languishing, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languishing, the mountains quaking at Him, and the hills melting, and the earth being burned at His presence, yes, the world, and all that dwell in it, asking who can stand before His indignation, and who can abide in the fierceness of His anger, His fury being poured out like fire, and the rocks being thrown down by Him.
Nahum declares the Lord as good, a strong hold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him, but with an overrunning flood He will make an utter end of Nineveh’s place, and darkness shall pursue His enemies, promising He will make an utter end, affliction shall not rise up the second time, this being good news for God’s people even as it announces genuine doom for Assyria, closing with a promise directed to Judah, that though they were cut down, yet He will pass through them, and He will afflict them no more, for now He will break his yoke from off them, and will burst his bonds in sunder, this magnificent opening chapter establishing both God’s terrifying power against His enemies and His genuine goodness toward those who trust Him.
Nahum’s striking opening description, God as jealous and avenging yet also slow to anger and a strong hold in trouble, holds together both divine justice and genuine goodness without contradiction, revealing character rather than mere raw power. This chapter’s good news for Judah woven directly into terrifying judgment against Assyria demonstrates that the same divine attributes bringing genuine comfort to God’s people bring genuine dread to His persistent enemies.
