Micah delivers one of Scripture’s most striking messianic prophecies, declaring, “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting,” the “ruler,” “moshel” in Hebrew, whose humble birthplace would contrast so sharply with His eternal, everlasting origin.
Micah describes how therefore He will give them up, until the time that she who travails has brought forth, then the remnant of His brethren shall return to the children of Israel, this coming ruler standing and feeding in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God, and they shall abide, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth, and this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into their land.
Micah describes the remnant of Jacob being in the midst of many people as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarries not for man, nor waits for the sons of men, and also as a lion among the beasts of the forest, closing with the Lord’s promise to cut off horses, chariots, and cities from their land, throwing down strongholds, cutting off witchcrafts and soothsayers, cutting off graven images and standing images, and executing vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen who have not heard, this remarkable chapter joining humble beginnings with ultimate, universal authority.
Micah’s precise prophecy naming Bethlehem as the Messiah’s birthplace, later quoted directly by the chief priests and scribes when Herod inquired where Christ should be born, demonstrates Scripture’s remarkable, specific predictive accuracy centuries before its dramatic historical fulfillment. His striking phrase describing this ruler’s goings forth as from everlasting points toward genuine divine, eternal preexistence rather than merely human origin beginning at Bethlehem’s birth.
