Micah urges the heads of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, to hear, asking whether it is not for them to know judgment, since they hate the “good,” “tov” in Hebrew, and love the evil, who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones, who eat the flesh of His people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.
Micah warns that then they shall cry to the Lord, but He will not hear them, He will even hide His face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings, rebuking the prophets who make His people err, who bite with their teeth, and cry peace, and who prepares not for their mouth, they even prepare war against him, declaring that therefore night shall be to them, that they shall not have a vision, and it shall be dark to them, that they shall not divine, the sun going down over the prophets, and the day being dark over them.
Micah declares he is full of power by the spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin, urging the heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, to hear this, who abhor judgment, and pervert all equity, who build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity, the heads judging for reward, and the priests teaching for hire, and the prophets divining for money, yet they lean upon the Lord, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us,” closing with the devastating warning that therefore, for their sake, Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.
Micah’s shocking, visceral imagery describing corrupt leaders devouring their own people like meat for the pot conveys just how seriously God regards leadership that exploits rather than genuinely shepherds those under its authority. His confrontation of leaders who presume God’s protection despite their corruption, saying no evil can come upon us, warns that false confidence in covenant privilege never substitutes for genuine covenant faithfulness.
