The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Narrow” it comes from the Greek Word “stenos” which means “narrow, confined.”
Jesus ends His famous sermon with a warning about two very different foundations. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Matthew 7.
Jesus warns against judging others harshly, pointing out the absurdity of trying to remove a speck from someone else’s eye while ignoring the beam in your own. He encourages persistent, confident prayer. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” He compares this to how even flawed human parents know how to give good gifts to their children, and reasons that God, who is perfectly good, will do so even more.
He then gives a summary statement that later generations would call the Golden Rule. “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” Jesus warns His listeners to enter through the “strait gate,” using the Greek word “stenos,” meaning narrow or confined, since the way that leads to destruction is broad and easy, while the way that leads to life is narrow and few find it.
He warns against false prophets who look harmless on the outside but are inwardly dangerous, “ravening wolves” in sheep’s clothing, and says they will be known by their fruit. He closes with the parable of two builders, one who builds his house on rock, and one who builds on sand. Both face the same storm, but only the house on the rock survives. Jesus makes the meaning explicit, comparing the wise builder to “whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them.”
The sermon ends exactly where it needs to, with a call to actually live out everything just taught, not merely admire it. Hearing good teaching is not the same as building on solid ground. Only obedience turns Jesus’ words into a foundation strong enough to survive the storms that come.
