Seeing the crowds, Jesus goes up a mountain and begins to teach His disciples what we now call the Sermon on the Mount. He opens with a series of statements known as the Beatitudes, each one beginning with the word “blessed.” The Greek word here is “makarios,” describing a deep, God-given contentment that does not depend on circumstances. “Blessed are the poor in spirit… Blessed are they that mourn… Blessed are the meek… Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness.” Each condition the world considers weak, Jesus calls blessed.
Jesus then tells His disciples they are “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world,” meant to influence and illuminate rather than hide. He makes clear He has not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to fulfil them, and that His followers’ righteousness must exceed even that of the scribes and Pharisees.
What follows is a series of sharp contrasts. The law said not to murder, but Jesus says anger itself carries the same danger. The law said not to commit adultery, but Jesus traces the sin back to the heart, to lust itself. He addresses oaths, retaliation, and finally the hardest command of all. “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you.” He closes this section with an extraordinarily high standard. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”
Jesus was not offering a slightly improved version of the law. He was revealing that true righteousness begins in the heart, long before any outward action. The Beatitudes describe a completely different way of measuring what it means to be blessed, one that has nothing to do with wealth, comfort, or status.
