The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Watch” it comes from the Greek Word “gregoreo” which means “to watch, to stay spiritually alert.”
Jesus’ disciples ask about the future, and He gives them one of the most detailed prophecies in the entire Bible. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Matthew 24.
Leaving the temple, Jesus predicts that not one stone of its magnificent buildings will be left standing upon another. Sitting privately on the Mount of Olives, His disciples ask when this will happen, and what sign will mark His coming and the end of the age. Jesus warns them first about deception, false Christs, wars, famines, and earthquakes, calling these only “the beginning of sorrows,” not the end itself.
He warns of coming persecution, betrayal, and false prophets, but promises that “he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” He describes a specific and severe sign, “the abomination of desolation,” urging those in Judaea to flee immediately when they see it, followed by “great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world.” He warns against being deceived by anyone claiming Christ has secretly appeared somewhere, insisting that His actual return will be as unmistakable and visible “as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west.”
Jesus teaches the parable of the fig tree, that just as its budding leaves signal summer is near, these signs signal His coming is near. But He is careful to add a crucial limitation. “Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” The Greek word for staying alert through this uncertainty is “gregoreo,” meaning to watch and remain spiritually awake. He compares His return to the days of Noah, when people were caught completely unprepared, and urges constant readiness, since the exact timing cannot be predicted or calculated.
Jesus gave real, specific signs, but paired every one of them with a clear warning against trying to pin down exact timing. The point was never to satisfy curiosity about a calendar. It was to keep His followers spiritually alert and faithful, ready for His return whenever it actually comes.
