Jesus warns the crowds and His disciples about the scribes and Pharisees, who “sit in Moses’ seat” but do not practice what they preach, loading heavy burdens on others while doing nothing to help carry them. He criticizes their love of public recognition, wide phylacteries, the best seats, and important-sounding titles, and instructs His followers instead toward humility, since “he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.”
Jesus then pronounces a series of severe warnings, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” The Greek word for hypocrite, “hypokrites,” originally described a stage actor, someone wearing a mask and playing a role rather than being genuine. He condemns them for shutting people out of the kingdom, for focusing on minor details like tithing herbs while neglecting “judgment, mercy, and faith,” and for cleaning the outside of the cup while remaining full of extortion and excess within. He compares them to whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside, full of decay within.
Jesus’ tone shifts from confrontation to genuine grief as He looks toward the city itself. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” He predicts the city’s house will be left desolate, closing this section of His ministry with sorrow rather than anger.
Jesus reserved His strongest words not for outsiders or obvious sinners, but for religious leaders whose outward performance had completely disconnected from their inward reality. And even after such harsh warnings, His final words here are heartbroken, not vindictive, longing to gather the very people rejecting Him.
