Jesus tells another parable, of a king who prepares a wedding feast for his son, but those originally invited refuse to come, so the king invites everyone his servants can find, both good and bad, filling the wedding hall. Pharisees and Herodians then try to trap Jesus over whether it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus asks for a coin, points to Caesar’s image on it, and answers, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s,” leaving His questioners amazed.
Sadducees, who deny any resurrection, present a hypothetical about a woman married to seven brothers in succession, trying to make the concept of resurrection look absurd. Jesus corrects their misunderstanding, explaining that in the resurrection people neither marry nor are given in marriage, and points to God’s own words to Moses, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,” proving that God is “not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
A lawyer then asks which commandment in the law is greatest. Jesus answers, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind,” calling this the first and great commandment, and adding a second, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” The Greek word for this love is “agapao,” describing a selfless, deliberate love rather than mere emotion. Jesus says that all the law and the prophets hang on these two commands. He then turns the tables, asking the Pharisees whose son the Christ is, and when they answer “the son of David,” Jesus quotes David himself calling the Messiah “Lord,” a question none of them can answer.
Every trap set for Jesus in this chapter ends the same way, with His questioners silenced and amazed. But the real point is not just His cleverness. It is where He ultimately lands, that every command, every law, every question about God, comes back to love, love for God completely, and love for others just as genuinely.
