The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Hosanna” it comes from the Hebrew Word “hosanna” which means “save now, we pray.”
Crowds shout praises as Jesus rides into Jerusalem, but the celebration will not last long. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Matthew 21.
Jesus sends two disciples ahead to bring a donkey and its colt, fulfilling Zechariah’s prophecy of a King coming “meek, and sitting upon an ass.” As Jesus rides into Jerusalem, great crowds spread their garments and palm branches on the road, crying out, “Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” The word “hosanna” itself is a plea, meaning “save now, we pray.”
Jesus enters the temple and drives out the money changers and merchants, declaring, “My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” He heals the blind and the lame there, and even children continue crying “Hosanna,” which further angers the chief priests and scribes. The next morning, Jesus curses a fig tree that has leaves but no fruit, and it withers immediately, a living illustration to His disciples about faith and about fruitless, empty religion.
When religious leaders challenge His authority, Jesus responds with a question of His own about John’s baptism that leaves them unable to answer without exposing themselves. He then tells two pointed parables, one about a father with two sons, one who says he will not obey but does, and one who says he will but does not, and another about wicked tenant farmers who kill the landowner’s servants and finally his own son. Jesus applies this directly to the religious leaders, warning that the kingdom of God will be taken from them and given to a nation bringing forth its fruits.
The same crowd that shouted Hosanna would, within days, be shouting for Jesus’ crucifixion. Public praise can be dangerously shallow. Jesus was far more concerned with genuine fruit, real obedience, and honest faith than with the size or volume of the crowd following Him at any given moment.
