Pharisees test Jesus with a question about divorce, and Jesus points back to God’s original design in creation, that a man and woman become “one flesh,” and “what therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” He explains that Moses only permitted divorce because of hardened hearts, not because it reflected God’s true intention. When His disciples react that it might be better not to marry at all, Jesus acknowledges that not everyone is called to remain single, but those who are should receive that calling.
People bring young children to Jesus for a blessing, and when the disciples try to turn them away, Jesus rebukes them. “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” A rich young man then approaches Jesus, asking what good thing he must do to inherit eternal life. When Jesus points to the commandments, the young man claims to have kept them all, and asks what he still lacks.
Jesus tells him to sell everything he has, give to the poor, and follow Him, and the young man “went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.” Jesus tells His disciples how hard it is for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven, comparing it to a camel passing through a needle’s eye, adding that with man this is impossible, “but with God all things are possible.” The Greek word for possible here is “dynatos.” Peter points out that the disciples have left everything to follow Jesus, and Jesus promises great reward, adding, “many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.”
The rich young man kept every rule on the outside, yet walked away from Jesus the moment following Him required giving up what he loved most. What we are unwilling to release often reveals exactly where our true trust is placed, far more clearly than any list of religious accomplishments.
