Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, and is “transfigured before them,” His face shining like the sun and His clothes turning white as light. The Greek word for this transformation is “metamorphoo,” meaning to fundamentally change form. Moses and Elijah appear, talking with Jesus, and Peter, overwhelmed, offers to build three shelters. A bright cloud overshadows them, and a voice declares, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” Terrified, the disciples fall on their faces, until Jesus touches them gently and tells them not to be afraid.
Coming down the mountain, Jesus and the disciples find a crowd, and a desperate father whose son suffers from severe seizures, whom the other disciples could not heal. Jesus rebukes the demon, and the boy is cured instantly. When the disciples privately ask why they could not cast it out, Jesus explains it was because of their unbelief, telling them that faith even as small as a mustard seed could move mountains.
Jesus again predicts His coming death and resurrection, and the disciples are filled with sorrow. When a question arises about paying the temple tax, Jesus, though rightfully exempt as the Son, chooses not to cause offense, and miraculously provides the exact coin needed from the mouth of a fish that Peter catches.
For one brief moment on that mountain, Peter, James, and John saw Jesus’ true glory fully unveiled. It was overwhelming, and they could not stay there. But that same glorious Son was already walking straight toward suffering, choosing the road down the mountain over staying in that dazzling moment.
