MATTHEW 14 ‐ “Feeding Five Thousand”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Little faith” it comes from the Greek Word “oligopistos” which means “of little faith.”

A birthday party ends in murder, and a hillside picnic turns into a miracle for thousands. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Matthew 14.

Herod hears reports about Jesus and fears that John the Baptist, whom he had beheaded, has risen from the dead. The chapter recounts how Herodias, angry at John for condemning her marriage to Herod, used her daughter’s dance at a birthday feast to manipulate Herod into executing John, delivering his head on a platter. John’s disciples bury his body and go tell Jesus.

Hearing the news, Jesus withdraws by boat to a solitary place, but the crowds follow him on foot. Moved with compassion, He heals their sick throughout the day. As evening comes and the disciples urge Him to send the hungry crowd away, Jesus instead tells them, “Give ye them to eat.” With just five loaves and two fish, Jesus blesses the food, and it multiplies enough to feed about five thousand men, plus women and children, with twelve baskets of fragments left over.

Jesus then sends His disciples ahead by boat while He goes up a mountain alone to pray. Late that night, He comes to them walking on the sea. Terrified, thinking they see a ghost, the disciples cry out, but Jesus reassures them, “It is I; be not afraid.” Peter asks to come to Him on the water and briefly succeeds, until fear at the wind causes him to sink, prompting Jesus to catch him, gently rebuking his “little faith.” When they climb into the boat, the wind ceases, and the disciples worship Him, declaring, “Of a truth thou art the Son of God.”

Peter’s brief walk on water shows both remarkable faith and how quickly fear can overtake it. Jesus did not let him sink. He reached out immediately. Whatever storm feels overwhelming right now, the same hand that caught Peter is just as ready to catch anyone who cries out for help.
