Sitting by the sea with a crowd so large He teaches from a boat, Jesus tells the parable of the sower, seed falling on different types of soil, wayside, rocky ground, thorns, and good ground, producing wildly different results. When His disciples ask why He teaches in parables, Jesus explains that it is “given” to them to understand the mysteries of the kingdom, while others hear without truly understanding. The Greek word for these hidden truths is “mysterion,” a mystery now being revealed.
Jesus continues with a string of short, vivid parables. The wheat and the tares, growing together until harvest. The mustard seed, tiny yet growing into a great tree. The leaven, hidden in dough until it works through the whole batch. The treasure hidden in a field, and the pearl of great price, both worth selling everything to obtain. The net cast into the sea, gathering both good and bad fish, sorted only at the end. Each parable reveals something different about how the kingdom grows, spreads, and will ultimately be judged.
Jesus privately explains the parable of the tares to His disciples, describing a future judgment where the wicked are separated from the righteous. He then returns to His hometown of Nazareth, where the people, familiar with His family, take offense at Him. Jesus notes that “a prophet is not without honour, save in his own country,” and, because of their unbelief, does not do many mighty works there.
The kingdom of heaven, according to these parables, often starts small and hidden, a seed, a bit of yeast, a buried treasure, before becoming something enormous. Even people who grew up around Jesus struggled to recognize what was right in front of them. Familiarity is not the same thing as understanding.
