Jesus hands His authority to twelve ordinary men and sends them out on their own. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Matthew 10.
Jesus calls His twelve disciples together and gives them power over unclean spirits and every kind of sickness and disease. He names them one by one, from Simon Peter down to Judas Iscariot, “who also betrayed him.” The Greek word for this sending out is “apostello,” meaning to commission and send with authority, the very root of the word apostle.
He instructs them to go first to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel,” preaching that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, healing the sick, and casting out devils, all “freely,” since they themselves received freely. He tells them to travel light, trusting that “the workman is worthy of his meat,” and warns them plainly that they will face real opposition, being delivered up, scourged, and hated for His name’s sake.
Jesus reassures them not to fear those who can kill the body but not the soul, reminding them that even sparrows do not fall without God’s knowledge, and that “the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” He warns that following Him will sometimes divide even families, and that anyone unwilling to take up their cross and follow Him is not worthy of Him. He closes with a promise, that whoever receives His messengers receives Him, and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of His followers “shall in no wise lose his reward.”
Jesus did not wait for His disciples to be fully ready before sending them out with real authority and a real mission. He was honest about the cost, but also generous with reassurance, reminding them constantly of how closely God watches over the very people He sends.
