MARK 4 ‐ “Parables and a Storm Calmed”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Be still” it comes from the Greek Word “phimoo” which means “to muzzle, to silence completely.”

Jesus teaches in stories all day, then proves He has power over the wind and waves themselves. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Mark 4.

Teaching from a boat to accommodate the enormous crowd on shore, Jesus tells the parable of the sower, seed falling on the wayside, on stony ground, among thorns, and on good ground, producing wildly different results. When His disciples ask about the parable privately, Jesus explains its meaning in detail, then adds a warning not to hide a lamp under a bushel, since “there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested.”

Jesus continues with the parable of the seed growing secretly, a farmer scattering seed that sprouts and grows without him understanding how, and the parable of the mustard seed, the smallest of seeds growing into the largest of garden plants, offering shelter for birds. Mark notes that Jesus taught the crowds only in parables, but explained everything privately to His own disciples afterward.

That evening, Jesus tells His disciples to cross to the other side of the sea. A furious storm arises, filling the boat with water, while Jesus sleeps peacefully in the stern. Terrified, the disciples wake Him, crying, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Jesus rebukes the wind and says to the sea, “Peace, be still.” The Greek word for this command to be silenced is “phimoo,” meaning to muzzle or completely silence. Immediately the wind ceases and there is a great calm. Jesus asks His disciples why they are so fearful and still lack faith, and they respond in awe, “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Jesus was fully at rest in the middle of the very storm that terrified His experienced, seasoned fishermen disciples. His peace was never dependent on the actual conditions around Him. That same authority that calmed the sea with a word is available to calm whatever storm feels overwhelming right now.
