The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Beside himself” it comes from the Greek Word “existemi” which means “to be amazed, out of one’s senses.”

In the synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus heals a man’s withered hand, watched closely by Pharisees looking for a reason to accuse Him. Grieved by their hardened hearts, Jesus asks whether it is lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath, then heals the man anyway, and the Pharisees immediately begin plotting with the Herodians to destroy Him. Great multitudes follow Jesus from Galilee, Judaea, Jerusalem, and even beyond the Jordan, pressing in so much that He has His disciples ready a small boat so the crowd will not crush Him.
Jesus goes up a mountain and appoints twelve men to be with Him and to be sent out to preach and to have authority over devils, naming Simon Peter, James and John, whom He calls “Boanerges,” meaning sons of thunder, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who would betray Him. When Jesus returns home, the crowd is so overwhelming that His own family sets out to restrain Him, since people were saying “He is beside himself.” The Greek phrase for this, “existemi,” describes being out of one’s senses, amazed to the point of losing composure.
Scribes from Jerusalem accuse Jesus of casting out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils. Jesus answers with simple logic, that a kingdom or house divided against itself cannot stand, and warns of a serious sin, blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, that will never be forgiven. When His mother and brothers arrive and call for Him from outside the crowd, Jesus looks at those sitting around Him and redefines family in spiritual terms. “Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.”
Even the people closest to Jesus, His own family, misunderstood what He was doing at times. Being misjudged, even by those who love us, does not necessarily mean we are off course. Jesus kept doing His Father’s will regardless of how His actions were being interpreted by the people watching.
