The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “New” it comes from the Greek Word “kainos” which means “new, of a new kind.”
Four friends get creative when the crowd blocks their path to Jesus. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Mark 2.
Jesus returns to Capernaum, and the house where He is teaching becomes so crowded that four men carrying a paralyzed friend cannot get near the door. Undeterred, they climb onto the roof, dig through it, and lower the man down on his bed directly in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus first forgives the man’s sins, prompting scribes present to accuse Him privately of blasphemy. To prove His authority to forgive sins, Jesus heals the man completely, and he walks out carrying his own bed while the crowd glorifies God, amazed, saying, “We never saw it on this fashion.”
Jesus calls Levi the tax collector to follow Him, and Levi immediately rises and later hosts a dinner with many other tax collectors and sinners. When scribes and Pharisees criticize Jesus for eating with such company, He answers plainly, “They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick.” Questioned about why His disciples do not fast like John’s disciples or the Pharisees do, Jesus explains that new wine, “kainos” in Greek, meaning new or of a new kind, requires new wineskins, since the old ones would burst under the pressure of something genuinely new.
Walking through grainfields on the Sabbath, Jesus’ hungry disciples pluck heads of grain, and Pharisees accuse them of unlawful work. Jesus responds with an example from David’s life, then declares plainly, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath,” adding that “the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”
The paralyzed man never said a word in this story. It was the persistent faith of his four friends that brought him into Jesus’ presence. Sometimes the people around us carry us toward healing when we cannot get there ourselves, a picture of what real community is meant to look like.
