Pharisees test Jesus about divorce, and He points back to God’s original design in creation, that a man and woman become one flesh, and “what therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” People bring young children for Jesus to touch, and when the disciples rebuke them, Jesus is indignant, saying, “Suffer the little children to come unto me… for of such is the kingdom of God.” A rich man runs to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life, and when he claims to have kept all the commandments, Jesus, looking on him with love, tells him to sell everything and follow Him. The man goes away grieved, since he had great possessions, and Jesus tells His disciples how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God, comparing it to a camel passing through a needle’s eye. For a third time, Jesus tells His twelve disciples plainly what awaits Him in Jerusalem, betrayal, condemnation, mocking, scourging, death, and resurrection after three days. Almost immediately, James and John ask to sit at His right and left hand in glory, and when the other ten become indignant, Jesus teaches that true greatness in His kingdom means becoming servant of all, “for even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” The Greek word for ransom, “lytron,” describes the price paid to secure someone’s release or freedom. Leaving Jericho, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus hears that Jesus is passing and cries out repeatedly for mercy, undeterred even as the crowd tells him to be silent. Jesus stops and calls him over, and when Bartimaeus asks that his sight be restored, Jesus tells him his faith has made him whole. Immediately he receives his sight and follows Jesus on the road.
Jesus defines His own mission in this chapter with striking clarity, giving His life as a ransom for many. That single phrase reframes everything that follows toward the cross. And Bartimaeus’s refusal to stay quiet, even when the crowd pressured him otherwise, is a picture worth remembering whenever persistence in seeking Jesus feels inconvenient to everyone else.
