Malachi delivers this commandment to the priests, that if they will not hear, and lay it to heart, to give glory to His name, He will send a “curse,” “meerah” in Hebrew, upon them, and He will curse their blessings, warning He will corrupt their seed, and spread dung upon their faces, even the dung of their solemn feasts, that this commandment might be with them, that His covenant might be with Levi. Malachi describes His covenant with Levi as one of life and peace, given for the fear with which he feared Him, and was afraid before His name, the law of truth being in his mouth, and iniquity not being found in his lips, he walking with Him in peace and equity, and turning many away from iniquity, for the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts, but Malachi rebukes them, for they have departed out of the way, they have caused many to stumble at the law, they have corrupted the covenant of Levi. Malachi asks whether they have not all one father, whether one God has not created them, asking why they deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of their fathers, rebuking Judah for dealing treacherously, and an abomination being committed in Israel and in Jerusalem, for Judah has profaned the holiness of the Lord which He loved, and has married the daughter of a strange god, declaring the Lord will cut off the man who does this, warning also that they cover the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, because He regards not the offering any more, asking why, since the Lord has been witness between him and the wife of his youth, against whom he has dealt treacherously, though she is his companion, and the wife of his covenant, closing with a plea that none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth, for the Lord hates putting away.
Malachi’s rebuke of the priesthood for corrupting the covenant of Levi demonstrates that spiritual leaders bear especially serious responsibility, since their departure from truth causes many others to stumble alongside them. His pointed question, have we not all one father, exposes how treacherous dealing between brothers and the casual breaking of marriage covenants both violate the same underlying truth, that genuine faithfulness toward God requires genuine faithfulness toward others.
