Jesus travels through cities and villages preaching, accompanied by the twelve and by several women, including Mary Magdalene, who support Him and His disciples out of their own resources. Jesus tells the parable of the sower to a large crowd, then explains it privately to His disciples, and adds the illustration of a candle that should never be hidden under a container, since “nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest.” When His mother and brothers arrive but cannot reach Him through the crowd, Jesus responds that His true family consists of “they which hear the word of God, and do it.” Crossing the lake, a fierce storm arises while Jesus sleeps, and the terrified disciples wake Him, crying that they are about to perish. Jesus rebukes the wind and the raging water, and it becomes calm, then asks His disciples, “Where is your faith?” Arriving in the country of the Gadarenes, Jesus meets a man possessed by many devils, living naked among the tombs. When Jesus asks his name, he answers, “Legion,” since many devils had entered him. Jesus permits them to enter a herd of swine, which rushes into the lake and drowns, and the man is found sitting, clothed, and in his right mind. Returning across the lake, Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, begs Jesus to heal his dying daughter. On the way, a woman who had suffered bleeding for twelve years touches the border of Jesus’ garment and is instantly healed. Jesus, perceiving that “virtue,” “dynamis” in Greek meaning power, had gone out from Him, calls her forward, and she confesses before everyone, trembling. He tells her, “Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole.” Word comes that Jairus’ daughter has died, but Jesus tells him only to believe, and taking her by the hand, He raises her back to life.
In a single chapter, Jesus demonstrates authority over nature, over an overwhelming spiritual force, and over death itself. Whatever kind of chaos a person faces, physical, spiritual, or the finality of death, this chapter shows that none of it stands beyond the reach of Jesus’ power.
