A Roman centurion sends elders to ask Jesus to heal his dying servant, and when Jesus approaches, the centurion sends word that he is not worthy to have Jesus enter his house, understanding, as a man under authority himself, that Jesus need only speak the word from a distance. Jesus marvels at him, telling the crowd, “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.” The servant is healed at that very moment.
Traveling to the city of Nain, Jesus encounters a funeral procession, a widow burying her only son. Moved with compassion, He touches the coffin, says, “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise,” and the young man sits up and speaks. Jesus gives him back to his mother, and the crowd, filled with fear, glorifies God, saying a great prophet has risen among them. John the Baptist, hearing of these things from prison, sends disciples to ask Jesus directly whether He is the one who should come. Jesus points to the evidence itself, the blind seeing, the lame walking, lepers cleansed, the dead raised, and the poor hearing good news, then praises John publicly as the greatest of those born of women.
At a Pharisee’s house, a sinful woman weeps at Jesus’ feet, washing them with her tears, wiping them with her hair, and anointing them with expensive ointment. When Simon the Pharisee judges her silently, Jesus tells a parable about two debtors forgiven different amounts, asking which one would love the creditor more. He tells Simon that this woman’s many sins are forgiven, “for she loved much,” while those forgiven little love little, and He tells her plainly, “Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”
The centurion’s confidence in Jesus’ authority, without needing to see Him or touch Him, impressed Jesus more than anything He had seen among His own people. And the sinful woman’s overwhelming love flowed directly out of how much she understood she had been forgiven. Both stories tie genuine faith directly to genuine gratitude.
