The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Acceptable” it comes from the Greek Word “dektos” which means “acceptable, favorable, welcome.”
Jesus faces the devil in the desert, then nearly gets thrown off a cliff in His own hometown. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 4.
Full of the Holy Ghost, Jesus is led into the wilderness and tempted by the devil for forty days, eating nothing the entire time. The devil challenges Him to turn stones to bread, offers Him authority over all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, and dares Him to throw Himself from the temple to test God’s protection. Jesus answers each temptation with Scripture, and the devil departs “for a season.”
Returning to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, Jesus teaches in the synagogues and comes to Nazareth, where He reads from Isaiah in the synagogue on the Sabbath. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor… to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” The Greek word for acceptable here is “dektos,” meaning favorable or welcome. Jesus declares that this Scripture is fulfilled that very day, astonishing the crowd, though their initial admiration quickly turns to fury when He points out that prophets like Elijah and Elisha were sent to help outsiders rather than their own people. Enraged, they try to throw Him off a cliff, but Jesus passes through the crowd and leaves.
In Capernaum, Jesus teaches with authority, casts an unclean spirit out of a man in the synagogue, and heals Simon’s mother-in-law of a severe fever. That evening, He heals many who are brought to Him, and the next morning, though the crowds try to keep Him from leaving, Jesus explains He must preach the kingdom of God to other cities too, “for therefore am I sent.”
The same hometown crowd that marveled at Jesus’ gracious words turned violently against Him within moments, simply because His message didn’t stay comfortably within their expectations. Familiarity with Jesus never guarantees genuine acceptance of everything He actually says.
