A dying criminal asks Jesus for one thing, and receives an answer no one expected. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 23.
Jesus is brought before Pilate, who finds no fault in Him and sends Him to Herod, who mocks Him and sends Him back. Pilate repeatedly tries to release Jesus, but the crowd, stirred up by the chief priests, demands Barabbas instead and cries for Jesus to be crucified. Pilate delivers Jesus to their will. As Jesus carries His cross toward Golgotha, Simon of Cyrene is compelled to help carry it, and Jesus tells the weeping women who follow Him to weep instead for themselves and their children in the difficult days ahead.
Jesus is crucified between two criminals, praying, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Rulers, soldiers, and one of the criminals mock Him, but the other criminal rebukes his companion, admitting their own guilt while insisting, “this man hath done nothing amiss,” and asks Jesus to remember him when He comes into His kingdom. Jesus answers, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise,” the Greek word for paradise being “paradeisos.”
Darkness covers the land from the sixth to the ninth hour, and the temple veil tears in two. Jesus cries out with a loud voice, “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit,” and dies. A Roman centurion, witnessing everything, glorifies God, declaring, “Certainly this was a righteous man.” Joseph of Arimathaea, a good and just member of the council who had not consented to their decision, asks Pilate for Jesus’ body, wraps it in linen, and lays it in a new tomb where no one had yet been buried, while the women who had followed Jesus from Galilee prepare spices and ointments before resting on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
Even in His final hours, Jesus extended forgiveness to those crucifying Him and paradise to a dying criminal who simply asked to be remembered. Nothing about that criminal’s life qualified him for such a promise. It was Jesus’ mercy alone, offered right up to His very last breath, that made all the difference.
