The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Cornerstone” it comes from the Greek Word “kephale gonias” which means “the head of the corner, cornerstone.”
Religious leaders throw question after question at Jesus, trying to trap Him in front of the crowd. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 20.
Chief priests, scribes, and elders challenge Jesus’ authority, and He responds with a question about John’s baptism that leaves them trapped either way they answer. Jesus tells the parable of a vineyard owner whose tenants beat and kill the servants he sends, and finally his own beloved son, applying it directly to the religious leaders who will reject and kill Him, the very “stone which the builders rejected” that becomes the head of the corner, “kephale gonias” in Greek.
Trying to trap Him further, spies ask whether it is lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, and Jesus, examining a coin, answers, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.” Sadducees, who deny resurrection, present a scenario about a woman married successively to seven brothers, trying to make resurrection sound absurd, but Jesus corrects them, explaining that those counted worthy of the resurrection neither marry nor die anymore, and pointing to God’s own words to Moses that He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, “not a God of the dead, but of the living.”
Jesus then asks how the scribes can call the Christ merely David’s son, when David himself, in the Psalms, calls Him “Lord.” In the hearing of all the people, Jesus warns His disciples to beware of scribes who love public recognition and long, showy prayers while secretly devouring widows’ houses, promising that such hypocrisy will receive greater condemnation.
Every trap set for Jesus in this chapter fails completely, and He consistently redirects the conversation toward deeper truths about God’s kingdom rather than simply winning an argument. His identity as both David’s son and David’s Lord captures the mystery at the center of who He truly is.
